EXPERIENCED HIRES

What skills are in particular demand at the BILSTEIN GROUP?
We are looking for employees with both a technical and commercial background. In light of our strategic expansion, we are also seeking specialists with sales and business expertise who are willing and happy to travel regularly. As the BILSTEIN GROUP becomes more international, we value candidates who are open to other cultures, and either speak a foreign language already or are keen to learn one.

APPRENTICES

When is the right time to apply?
It is best to apply after you have received your summer report, the year before you wish to start your training – so in summer 2019 if you want to join us in 2020. You can also apply closer to your preferred start date if you choose. We suggest giving our HR team a call to clear up any doubts.
How can I learn more about the BILSTEIN GROUP beforehand?
There are various ways to find out more about what we do. We offer internships for high school students in almost every area of our business—simply send a speculative application to the department that interests you. We are also open to visiting local schools, and we attend a wide variety of career fairs so as to start initial informal conversations.
How do I know which apprenticeship is right for me?
First, you must have an understanding of both your strengths and weaknesses. This is important in order to know what type of career you are most suited to. You might find it helpful to speak to teachers, parents, and friends. Doing an internship while at high school is also a great way of finding out exactly what a position involves on a day-to-day basis and whether you enjoy it. If you do embark on one, make the most of the opportunity to speak to more experienced members of the team too, to form a full, accurate picture of every aspect of the role.
What does the BILSTEIN GROUP expect of future apprentices?
It is important that you are an open-minded individual, enjoy your work, and work well in a team. Additionally, you should be highly motivated by the idea of constantly being able to grow your knowledge. The qualifications and grades you need depend on the position in question. For more information, see “Apprenticeships.”
What should I expect of my time as a apprentice?
To give you a full insight into your chosen field, you will spend time in as many different departments as possible, attend seminars on subjects such as business etiquette, and take part in a wide range of external activities, such as visiting a steelworks. This ensures plenty of variety, while giving you a good overview of the company. As part of the apprenticeship, you will also attend classes either every week or concentrated in blocks, depending on your position. For more information, please see the descriptions of the various training options available.
How long do apprenticeships last?
Depending on the position, apprenticeships last between two and three-and-a-half years. In some situations, it may be possible to shorten them to two years.
What can I expect after completing the apprenticeship?
You can look forward to a temporary or fixed-term contract and continuing your career with the BILSTEIN GROUP. Additionally, you will have the chance to combine your work with studying for a BA or BSc degree, as well as taking various specialist courses.

STUDENTS

Which courses are relevant to the BILSTEIN GROUP?
Our commercial departments are particularly interested in economics, business studies, international management, law, commercial law, and psychology graduates. On the technical side of the business, we look for graduates in IT, mechanical engineering, material engineering, material sciences, material technology, electrical engineering, and industrial engineering.
When can I apply for an internship or thesis placement?
To allow you to properly integrate into the way we do things, we require time for planning. We therefore advise you to apply three to six months before your preferred start date. However, if one of our teams needs someone urgently, a shorter-term approach may also be successful. Please give us a call to discuss before you apply.
How do I apply for a thesis placement?
You are welcome to approach us with a specific topic or general topic area for your thesis. Alternatively, you can ask us for suggestions, as our various departments often have ideas of their own. A discussion is often enough to identify a topic you can relate to. You are advised to make the necessary arrangements with your college in advance.
Are your internships and thesis placements paid?
Yes, you will be paid for your work at the BILSTEIN GROUP. The exact amount depends on the area of the business and the length of your internship/thesis placement.
Which BILSTEIN GROUP companies offer internships and thesis placements?
In general, we offer internships in every company and practically every field of the BILSTEIN GROUP at our Hagen-Hohenlimburg site in Germany. The same applies for thesis placements. If you would like to do an internship at a location outside Germany, please apply to them directly.
How much time should I set aside for an internship at BILSTEIN?
Three to six months are standard – enough time to gain valuable experience and insight into our business. However, shorter or longer periods are possible if it makes sense for both parties.
Which subjects are most relevant for the BILSTEIN GROUP in terms of thesis placements?
We don’t really have any preference and, generally speaking, all our departments are able to offer thesis placements.
